The Mission of the BHS Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is to enhance the educational standards by raising funds to support and enhance school facilities and programmes.

We know that our students' experiences at BHS are greatly improved by parental involvement. Our PTA is an active organisation supporting the needs of the School, and relies on parent volunteers to meet their goals each year. With the amazing support of our BHS family, we not only raise funds but we have fun, make friends along the way and bring smiles to the girls' faces!

Events

We are thrilled to host various events throughout the school year. Starting in September, certain events cater to the whole school, while others are department or year group specific. When putting together our calendar of events, it's extremely important to us to ensure that we have an array of events catering to our student body, as well as the BHS teaching and administration staff. Volunteers

There are many opportunities for you to get involved at school. We recognise that many of our parents work and are busy, but we welcome all volunteers, and appreciate any time you can give. Your daughters love having you at school, and it is a great way to keep up with what's going on around campus. Please consider giving us some of your time. Thank you in advance!

Fundraising

In addition to our various events, we also run multiple fundraising campaigns throughout the year. This includes the ever popular Popcorn Recess, our annual Tea Towel, and our bi-annual raffle. The funds that are raised during these campaigns are invested directly back into the school.

Parent Education

During the 2023/2024 school year, we introduced PTA sponsored parent education events. The purpose of these events, is to provide parents with helpful information on various topics that have been identified by the BHS teaching staff and leadership teams. Each topic is hosted by a subject specialist. Past Topics have included achieving academic success, and managing anxiety & reducing stress.

PTA Executive Committee

Annual Contributions

The funds raised each year are allocated between the Primary Department, the Secondary Department, and assigned general donations. General donation funds are assigned to various areas that will benefit from the PTA's support. These areas are determined by the Leadership Team, and voted on by the PTA Executive Committee each year. Between 2021, 2022, 2023,2024, and 2025 the PTA has raised over $400,000.

The BHS PTA Excellence Award

The BHS PTA Excellence Award is presented to a Secondary student who exemplifies the PTA’s charitable service and philanthropic ideals:

Is considerate and selfless in ways that improve school spirit or the experience of students at school
Has helped to bring about positive changes or contributed to the enhancement of school life
Has raised funds for school programs or facilities that help make the school a better place

Nominees must meet one of these criteria fully, and also be active in the other two categories.

The Award is given from the Bermuda High School PTA Excellence Prize Fund (the “Fund”), which is invested at The Bermuda Community Foundation (“BCF”). This Fund was created in 2013 and is made up of contributions by the PTA of $12,500, an external gift of $5,000 and a $2,500 permanently restricted gift from the RenaissanceRe Charity Challenge. The BHS PTA receives an annual grant from the Fund, which pays for part of the Award (the BHS PTA typically tops up the award to $1,000 out of annual fundraising profits). As part of the Award, the recipient(s) receives the privilege of allocating the funds from the Award to improving BHS.

The award recipients for the 2024/2025 school year was Vongai Benza '28.

How To Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved with the PTA. It is a great way to meet parents, BHS staff and learn about the school!

Primary PTA:

1. Volunteer to be a class parent. This is a great way to get to know other parents in your year group and the teachers. You can volunteer at the beginning of each school year. Just email your form teacher or the PTA if you are interested.
2. Another great way to get involved is to volunteer to chair one of the fundraising event committees. This can be done on a co-chair basis with a friend, which is always a fun way to do it. Please email the PTA if you are interested.
3. We also need a lot of volunteers at each fundraising event. A Sign-Up Genius usually comes out in the Parent Connection when we need help so keep your eye on the Parent Connection for this information.

Secondary PTA:

1. Volunteer to be a Parent Representative for your year group. The Secondary PTA meets monthly. Taking on this role is a great way to get involved in Secondary and meet new parents and staff. Please email the PTA at the beginning of the school year if you are interested.

Privacy and Data Protection Policy and Procedures

1. Purpose
The BHS Parent Teacher Association is committed to protecting the privacy and personal data of its donors, volunteers, beneficiaries, students and stakeholders in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) of Bermuda. This policy outlines how we collect, use, store, and protect personal information.

2. Scope
This policy applies to all volunteers, contractors, and third-party service providers who handle personal data on behalf of the BHS Parent Teacher Association.

3. Definitions

Personal Information: Any data relating to an identifiable individual, such as names, contact information, financial details, and preferences.
Sensitive Personal Information: Ethnic origin, sex, race, colour.
Data Subject: The individual to whom the personal information relates.
Processing: Any operation performed on personal data, including collection, storage, use, sharing, or deletion.

4. Collection and Use of Personal Information
We collect personal information only for legitimate purposes related to our mission, including:

Student management and communication
Administering events and activities
Communications with supporters and beneficiaries
Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Personal information collected may include:

Name, contact details (address, email, phone number)
Employment and professional details
Financial information

5. Data Minimisation
We will only collect personal information that is relevant and limited to the purposes outlined above.

6. Consent
Where applicable, the BHS Parent Teacher Association will obtain explicit consent from individuals before collecting, using, or sharing their personal information. Individuals may withdraw their consent at any time.

7. Data Storage and Security

Personal information will be stored securely using physical and electronic safeguards.
Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel only.
The BHS Parent Teacher Association will implement appropriate encryption, access controls, firewalls, and regular security audits to protect applicable electronic records.

8. Data Retention
Personal information will be retained only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected or to comply with legal obligations.

9. Sharing of Personal Information
Personal information may be shared with third parties, including service providers and regulatory bodies, where necessary for the BHS Parent Teacher Association operations and legal obligations. These third parties will be required to safeguard the personal information according to PIPA standards.

10. Data Subject Rights
Under PIPA, data subjects have the following rights:

Right to Access: Individuals may request access to their personal information held by the BHS Parent Teacher Association.
Right to Correction: Individuals can request the correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
Right to Erasure: Individuals may request the deletion of their personal information under certain circumstances.
Right to Object: Individuals have the right to object to the processing of their personal information based on legitimate interests.
Right to Restriction: Individuals can request a restriction on the processing of their personal information in certain situations.

Requests to exercise any of these rights must be made in writing to the BHS Parent Teacher Association designated Privacy Officer (contact information below).

11. Breach Notification
In the event of a data breach, affected individuals and the Privacy Commissioner will be notified as required under PIPA.

12. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or as required to ensure ongoing compliance with PIPA and reflect changes in operations or relevant legislation.
